Kalamazoo, MI Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

Section 36-170(A), amended most recently by Ordinance No. 2088 on August 12, 2024, sets a citywide overnight parking curfew on Kalamazoo's paved public streets: no motor vehicle may be parked, or left to remain parked, between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Two escape routes exist. First, § 36-187's overnight parking permit program lets residents of a Traffic-Engineer-designated zone buy a permit, for themselves or their guests, for a fee set by City Commission resolution. Second, § 36-170(C) lets the Traffic Engineer, with City Commission consent, designate specific blocks of specific streets as exceptions to the general curfew, and § 36-170(B) requires signs posted on those blocks giving notice.

The rule has teeth beyond an ordinary ticket: § 36-170(D) authorizes immediate impoundment, on top of a citation, of any vehicle parked in violation of the curfew if the Director of Public Works or a designee decides it is interfering, or will interfere, with street maintenance work such as street cleaning or snow plowing. That impoundment authority applies specifically to vehicles already violating Subsection A, so a permitted or exempted vehicle is not exposed to it. The rule traces back to the original Traffic Code § 25 and has been amended repeatedly since 1980, most recently to align the curfew hours and cross-reference the 2024 permit program.
