Meriden, CT Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Section 200-37 of the Meriden Code exempts vehicles bearing commercial license plates from the usual meter-feeding requirement when they occupy a metered space to load or unload merchandise or packages, provided the loading or unloading is done as expeditiously as possible. That carve-out sits within Article III, Parking Meters, alongside the Parking Commission's authority under § 200-31 to designate metered zones and set legal parking time in them. Outside that narrow commercial exemption, a vehicle that occupies a designated loading zone unlawfully, for example a non-commercial vehicle parked there or a commercial vehicle that lingers past what loading requires, is tagged under the general parking-violation fee schedule in § 200-25(A), which sets a $10 fee for a loading zone violation.

As with other Chapter 200 tickets, a police officer attaches a notice directing the owner to the Traffic Division of the Police Department, and the owner has 48 hours to pay before a $2 late penalty attaches and 30 days before the matter can be referred to the prosecutor under Connecticut General Statutes § 14-314. The rule gives delivery drivers and commercial haulers a practical way to make quick drops without hunting for meter coins, while still protecting the space for its intended loading purpose rather than general parking.
