Sunnyvale, CA Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Sunnyvale Municipal Code Chapter 10.36 (Loading and Special Zones) lets the city traffic engineer designate loading zones "in commercially zoned areas and elsewhere in front of the entrance to any place of business or in front of any hall or place used for the purpose of public assembly" under Section 10.36.010, and requires them marked with a yellow curb stencil under Section 10.36.020. Section 10.36.040(a)(2) defines the yellow zone: no stopping, standing or parking except to load or unload passengers or materials from commercial delivery vehicles, with a three-minute cap on passenger loading and a twenty-minute cap on material loading, applied between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. every day except Sundays and holidays unless the traffic engineer posts a different schedule.

Section 10.36.050 separately makes it unlawful to stop, stand or park in any loading zone for a purpose other than loading or unloading within the permitted time. A related passenger-loading (white curb) rule caps stops at three minutes under Section 10.36.030/10.36.040(a)(3), and alley loading under Section 10.36.070 is capped at twenty minutes for materials and three minutes for passengers. Rather than treating a loading-zone overstay as a criminal infraction, Section 1.04.010(c) of the General Penalty chapter pulls Section 10.36.050 (along with 10.36.040(b), 10.36.060, 10.36.065, 10.36.070 and 10.36.090) out of the infraction track and makes it subject to civil penalties under a city fee schedule, processed under California Vehicle Code Section 40203.5's administrative citation procedure rather than a criminal court appearance.
