Sunnyvale allows overnight street parking on most residential streets subject to the 72-hour rule. Permit Parking Districts require a valid permit overnight.
Overnight parking on Sunnyvale public streets is generally permitted for passenger vehicles, with the exception of Permit Parking Districts and posted no-parking zones. In designated Permit Parking Districts such as portions of the Heritage District, Downtown, and neighborhoods near Caltrain, vehicles must display a valid residential or guest permit overnight. The citywide 72-hour rule (CVC 22651(k) and SMC Title 10) still applies, so a parked vehicle must be moved at least every three days. Oversized and commercial vehicles cannot be parked overnight in residential areas. During storm or street-sweeping operations, posted signs may temporarily override overnight parking. Individuals cannot live in vehicles on public streets under SMC provisions and state law enforcement practices.
