Full Breakdown

City code bars parking a vehicle in one place on any public street or public metered lot for more than 24 continuous hours. There's no blanket overnight ban, you can leave a car on the street overnight, but once the 24-hour clock runs out in the same spot, it's a violation. City-owned or contracted work vehicles are exempt. This is separate from the posted signed restrictions (Sec. 114-601 through 114-611) that limit parking to specific hours or purposes on individual blocks, and from the winter odd/even snow-route rules, check for posted signs and snow-emergency notices too.

Violations & Fines

Fine of $20.00 per violation; vehicle can also be ticketed and, if left long enough or otherwise in violation, towed at the owner's expense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I park my car on a Des Moines street overnight?
Yes. There's no citywide overnight ban: the limit is 24 continuous hours in the same spot, not a nightly curfew.
What happens if I leave a car in the same spot for more than a day?
It violates Sec. 114-361.13 and draws a $20.00 fine; it can also be tagged as illegally parked and towed.
