Des Moines, IA Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

City code bars parking a vehicle in one place on any public street or public metered lot for more than 24 continuous hours. There's no blanket overnight ban, you can leave a car on the street overnight, but once the 24-hour clock runs out in the same spot, it's a violation. City-owned or contracted work vehicles are exempt. This is separate from the posted signed restrictions (Sec. 114-601 through 114-611) that limit parking to specific hours or purposes on individual blocks, and from the winter odd/even snow-route rules, check for posted signs and snow-emergency notices too.
