Detroit does not impose a citywide overnight street parking ban, but Chapter 55, Article II, Division 2 establishes residential parking permit (RPP) zones where overnight street parking without a permit is a civil infraction under Sec. 55-2-26.
Detroit's Chapter 55 governs traffic and vehicles. Article II, Division 2 (Secs. 55-2-26 and following) creates residential parking permit zones; on streets within an RPP zone, parking by non-permitted vehicles is restricted during posted hours and overnight parking by visitors typically requires a guest permit from the Municipal Parking Department. Outside of RPP zones, alternate-side and snow emergency restrictions in Chapter 55, Article IV, Division 3 apply, and signs at the street control specific overnight time-limit zones near business districts. Sec. 55-4-39 separately restricts commercial vehicles, RVs and trailers regardless of the hour.
Overnight parking violations in an RPP zone are civil infractions under Sec. 55-2-26; repeat violations and snow-emergency violations can result in tow and impound under Chapter 55, Article II, Division 4.
