Essex County has no countywide overnight residential parking ban; that is a municipal choice under NJ Title 39. The county does prohibit leaving vehicles in its parks overnight, since parks close at 10:00 p.m.
Whether overnight street parking is allowed depends on your Essex County town's ordinance, not a county rule; some municipalities restrict overnight parking and require permits, others do not. On county park property the rule is explicit. County code states: "No person shall leave a motor vehicle parked in any County park or property beyond the applicable hours of operation or where designated by signage... unless specifically authorized or permitted by the Director in writing." All county parks are open only from dawn until 10:00 p.m.
Municipal overnight fines run roughly $25 to $100. Vehicles left in county parks after hours may be removed by the county Sheriff or Director.
