Sonoma County has no county-wide ordinance banning overnight parking on unincorporated public roads. The general 72-hour limit in Chapter 18, Article III applies, and oversized vehicles are limited to six hours under Sec. 18-3.10. Posted street restrictions and HOA rules may impose stricter limits.
Research of Sonoma County Code Chapter 18 (Motor Vehicles and Traffic), Article III (Parking Regulations Generally), did not identify a county-wide ordinance prohibiting overnight street parking on unincorporated public roads. The principal restrictions applicable to overnight on-street parking are the 72-hour limit on standard vehicles and the six-hour limit on oversized vehicles or trailers under Sec. 18-3.10. Travel-trailer and RV occupancy on private property is regulated by Permit Sonoma Policy 8-1-1 (Temporary Occupancy of Travel Trailers, Recreational Vehicles, and Transportable Housing Units), which requires a temporary permit limited to construction, ADU, caregiver, or agricultural-employee use - simply sleeping overnight in an RV on a residential lot without such a permit is not authorized. Posted signed restrictions and California Vehicle Code Section 22507.5 (residential commercial-vehicle restrictions) may impose additional rules where adopted on specific roads.
Vehicles violating the 72-hour limit may be towed under CA Vehicle Code Sec. 22651. Oversized vehicles violating the 6-hour limit may be cited and removed. Unpermitted RV occupancy on private property is a Permit Sonoma Code Enforcement matter and may result in notices of violation and administrative penalties.
