Full Breakdown

Sec. 117-324(g) governs outdoor parking and storage of boats, trailers and recreational vehicles in residential districts. One such unit may be parked outdoors provided it is owned and used by a resident of the premises, is located in the side or rear yard, and is not parked in the area between the front of the residence and the street except for loading or unloading for less than eight hours. Any additional boats, trailers or RVs beyond the first must meet all the same provisions and specifically be located in the rear yard.

The unit cannot be used for living, sleeping or housekeeping purposes, and it must be currently registered and licensed as state law requires. The administrative officer has discretion to approve placement of a unit closer to the front than the general rule allows in cases where it sits 100 feet or more from the street right-of-way, giving large lots some flexibility. This sits within the broader off-street parking article (Sec. 117-324), which elsewhere in subsection (d)(13) also bars using required off-street parking spaces for storing boats, motor homes, campers or mobile homes unless they are in a designated, screened staging area, reinforcing that RV and boat storage is meant to stay out of active parking areas and visually screened from the street.

Violations & Fines

Parking a boat, trailer or recreational vehicle in the front yard beyond the eight-hour loading exception, using it for living or housekeeping purposes, keeping more than one such unit outside the rear yard, or storing an unregistered/unlicensed unit violates Sec. 117-324(g) and is enforced as a zoning violation by Jonesboro code enforcement.
