Abilene, TX Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

302(a) of the Texas Transportation Code bans stopping, standing, or parking on the roadway side of another parked vehicle, on a sidewalk, in an intersection, on a crosswalk, within 30 feet of a safety zone unless a municipality posts a different distance, alongside a street excavation if it would obstruct traffic, on a bridge or elevated structure, on a railroad track, or wherever an official sign prohibits it. Subsection (b) adds a second, distance-based list that applies except when a driver is momentarily loading or unloading a passenger: no standing or parking in front of a driveway, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, within 30 feet of the approach to a flashing signal, stop sign, yield sign, or traffic-control signal, or within 20 feet of a fire station driveway, 75 feet on the opposite side, or wherever signs prohibit standing.

Subsection (c) separately bans parking within 50 feet of a railroad crossing except to briefly load or unload merchandise. These state rules apply automatically inside Abilene and layer on top of the City's own section 18-196, which requires drivers to leave at least 10 feet clear on each side of a marked centerline, and section 18-183, which lets the Director of Traffic and Transportation designate tow-away zones and impound any vehicle left more than 24 hours in one.
