Fitchburg, WI Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Fitchburg City Code § 68-211 sets the city's general limit on parked vehicles: once the department of public works has posted signs giving notice, no one may stop or leave any vehicle standing on that stretch of street for more than 24 hours. The rule is signage-dependent, so it only binds on streets the city has actually marked; unmarked residential streets in Fitchburg, Wisconsin fall back to whatever more specific rule applies, such as the November 15 to March 15 nightly winter parking ban in § 68-212 or the large-vehicle and motor-home limits in §§ 68-216 and 68-217.

The 24-hour clock exists to keep trailers, disabled cars, and long-term storage off public streets that residents and visitors need for daily parking turnover. A Fitchburg police officer who finds a vehicle that has exceeded the posted 24-hour limit has the same removal authority the code gives for any stopping, standing, or parking violation: the officer can tow the vehicle to a place of safekeeping at the owner's expense under § 68-208(b), or simply direct the operator to move it, without excusing the underlying citation.

Because the ordinance sits in Article IV, Division 1 'Generally,' it functions as the fallback street-parking rule the city posts wherever it has not adopted a more specific time, side-of-street, or vehicle-type restriction elsewhere in Chapter 68.
