Syracuse, NY Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Article XVI of the Traffic Code, 'Standing or Parking Prohibited in Specified Places,' lists sixteen locations in § 15-316(a) where no one may stand or park a vehicle, unless doing so is necessary to avoid a traffic conflict or is done at a police officer's or traffic-control device's direction. The list bars parking on a sidewalk or between a sidewalk and curb; in front of a public or private driveway; within an intersection; within ten feet of the curb point nearest a fire hydrant; on a crosswalk; within ten feet of a crosswalk at an intersection; within thirty feet of a flashing beacon, stop sign or traffic-control signal; between a safety zone and the curb, or within twenty-five feet of a safety zone's ends; within fifty feet of a railroad crossing; near fire station driveways; alongside a street excavation that would obstruct traffic; on the roadway side of another parked vehicle; and under a bridge or in a highway tunnel.

Subsection (b) singles out four of those categories, fire hydrants, driveways blocked by towed vehicles, bare ground, and required-setback areas, for mandatory towing by police at the owner's expense. A related rule in § 15-301 governs how a car must sit once legally parked: it must stand parallel to the curb, headed in the direction of lawful traffic movement, with its curbside wheels within twelve inches of the curb, so parking against the flow of traffic, wrong-way parking, is independently unlawful even on an otherwise open block. Angle parking is allowed only on streets the commissioner has specifically designated and signed for it.
