Taunton, MA Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Section 405-43 of the Taunton Code lays out a list of places where standing or parking is flatly prohibited, and it reaches beyond the driver behind the wheel: the owner of a vehicle registered in his or her name can also be held responsible for allowing, permitting or suffering that vehicle to sit in a prohibited spot. Subsection I bars parking upon or in front of any private road or driveway, the rule most homeowners run into when a neighbor or visitor blocks their own driveway.

Subsection F requires that where parking is otherwise allowed, both wheels on the right side of the vehicle sit within 12 inches of the curb or edge of the roadway; on one-way streets, vehicles must point in the direction of travel with the same 12-inch clearance, unless the street has designated angle parking. Other subsections layer on additional prohibited spots: within an intersection, upon a sidewalk or crosswalk, within the last 20 feet approaching a crosswalk unless a marked space says otherwise, within 20 feet of an intersecting way, within 10 feet of a fire hydrant, wherever parking would leave less than a 10-foot clear lane for passing traffic, along designated curb areas near fire and police stations, at curbs near church, school, hotel, hospital, bus terminal, theater or public-assembly entrances marked with official signs except to load or unload passengers, and inside any posted construction zone.

The section was last amended August 8, 2000, and sits at the front of Article III, Stopping, Standing and Parking, which also separately regulates bus stops, taxi stands, loading zones and specific streets.
