Wayne County, IN Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Under Wayne County Code § 72.02, no person may park a vehicle on a road in a manner or under conditions that leave available less than ten feet of roadway width for free movement of vehicular traffic, a rule enforced countywide on unincorporated roads by the Sheriff's Department per the ROADWAY and SHERIFF definitions in § 72.01. Section 72.03 separately bans parking a vehicle for the principal purpose of displaying it for sale, or washing, greasing or repairing it except for emergency repairs. The Board of Commissioners can post no-parking signs adjacent to schools under § 72.04, on roads narrower than 20 feet or on one side of roads narrower than 30 feet under § 72.05, on the left side of one-way roads under § 72.06, and in stretches up to 300 feet near hazardous or congested spots under § 72.07; once such signs are erected, parking against them is a violation.

Section 72.08 clarifies these bans apply at all posted or specified times, except when a vehicle must stop to avoid a traffic conflict or to comply with a Sheriff's officer's or traffic-control device's directions. Because § 72.02 carries no chapter-specific fine, § 10.99's general penalty applies: a fine of not more than $2,500 for a first violation, though the code expressly exempts traffic and parking violations from the enhanced $7,500 second-offense fine that applies to other county code violations, with each day of a continuing violation a separate offense.
