Coeur d'Alene, ID Public Conduct: Jaywalking (2026)

Chapter 10.48 of the Coeur d'Alene Municipal Code is titled Pedestrians and holds two sections. Section 10.48.010, Right Of Way; Crosswalks, is the rule that covers mid-block crossing. A pedestrian who crosses a street at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or pedestrian crossing, or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, must yield the right of way to vehicles approaching on the street being entered. The rule is framed as a duty to yield, not a flat ban on crossing, and the section prints no fine of its own. Vehicles already approaching hold priority, and the burden of giving way falls on the person on foot.

Section 10.48.020, Traffic-Control Lights, covers signalized streets. Where traffic on any street in the City is controlled by traffic-control lights, pedestrians facing the green light can proceed across the street, but cannot step into the intersection to cross the street when facing the red light.

Two parking rules protect crossings from the vehicle side. Section 10.20.010 A bars stopping, standing or parking on a crosswalk, within 30 feet in each direction from the point of intersection of the curb lines at an intersection, and within 20 feet of any other location of a roadway distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossing by lines or other markings on the surface. The same section keeps vehicles off an officially marked bicycle lane, bicycle path or footpath, except at an intersection or when entering or leaving a roadway at a driveway, private road or alley.
