Sunnyvale, CA Public Conduct: Outdoor Smoking Restrictions (2026)

030(a) prohibits smoking in specific outdoor and unenclosed locations even though they are not fully enclosed: "Outdoor dining areas" (subsection (3)); "Gymnasiums, fieldhouses, stadiums and outdoor theaters" (subsection (4)); "Public parks" (subsection (5)); "In service areas" such as ATM lines, transit stops and cab lines (subsection (6)); and "the pedestrian retail district," defined as South Murphy Avenue between Washington and Evelyn Avenues (subsection (8)). The chapter also reaches public places "being used for a public event, including a farmer's market, parade, craft fair," though smoking stays legal on streets and sidewalks used only as through-routes during those events.

050 applies that "reasonable distance" requirement around any doorway, window, opening or vent leading into an enclosed space where smoking is banned, and around any service area, with an exception for someone actively walking past on the way elsewhere. 030(d), but only until their ownership, occupancy certificate or use changes. 060 requires "No Smoking" signs with letters at least one inch tall, or the international no-smoking symbol, posted at every entrance and restroom of a covered outdoor or indoor space, and signs on a building's exterior must also state the twenty-five-foot buffer requirement. 090 makes violating the outdoor ban an infraction, with a possible city civil fine of $250 to $1,000 per violation.
