Terrebonne Parish, LA Public Conduct: Public Alcohol Use (2026)

Section 19-244 of the Terrebonne Parish Code prohibits possessing or using any open glass or glass-like container to consume alcoholic or nonalcoholic beverages on the parish's public streets, sidewalks, alleys, wharves and levees, tracing back to § 9-78 of the 1965 City Code. The rule is a glass-specific hazard ordinance, not a blanket open-container ban: cans, plastic cups and other non-glass containers of alcohol fall outside this section, and drinking from those on a public sidewalk is not itself a violation of § 19-244. Levees make the list because Terrebonne's flood-protection system doubles as public walking and gathering space along Bayou Terrebonne and the Intracoastal Waterway, and broken glass there is both a litter and a flood-infrastructure safety concern.

Because § 19-244 carries no fine of its own, a violation defaults to the Code's general penalty at § 1-6: up to 30 days in the parish jail, a fine of up to $500, or both, with up to 100 hours of community service available in place of jail time. in that downtown Houma block.
