Full Breakdown

Sarasota lets adults 18+ caught with under 20 grams of cannabis take a $100 fine or 10 hours of community service instead of a criminal charge, but only if they weren't ingesting, inhaling, vaping, smoking or otherwise consuming it, or holding burnt cannabis, on public property or on private property open to the public. Smoke or vape it in public and that civil-citation off-ramp is unavailable, leaving the underlying state-law possession offense in play. Appeals of a citation go to the special magistrate within 10 days.

Violations & Fines

Civil citation: $100 fine or 10 hours community service within 60 days for qualifying private possession; public consumption forfeits this diversion and reverts to standard misdemeanor exposure under state law.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I smoke cannabis in a Sarasota park and just pay $100?
No: the $100 civil citation only applies if you were not consuming cannabis on public property or property open to the public.
Is recreational cannabis legal in Sarasota?
No. Florida has not legalized recreational cannabis; this ordinance only sets a local citation option for small private possession.
