Hackensack, NJ Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Article II of Chapter 63, §§ 63-7 through 63-10, regulates roller skates (including in-line skates) and skateboards separately from bicycles. Section 63-8A bars operating either in a manner that endangers people or property, or shows willful or wanton disregard for safety, on any public street, highway, sidewalk or public property. Section 63-8B goes further for one specific corridor: no person may operate roller skates or a skateboard on Main Street, including its sidewalks, at any time, a flat, location-specific ban with no time-of-day exception. Section 63-8F adds a citywide curfew, prohibiting skating or skateboarding on any public street, sidewalk or roadway after sunset and before sunrise.

Section 63-8E bars the activity in or upon any city-owned parking lot or other parking facility, § 63-8D requires the property owner's or occupant's express permission before skating or skateboarding on private property, and § 63-8C bars being towed or pushed by a motor vehicle or a bicycle rider while skating. Section 63-8G requires anyone skating or skateboarding on a public street, sidewalk or roadway to obey stop signs and traffic signals to the same extent a motor vehicle driver would. The Police Department, and any other city employees, officers or agents the City Manager designates, enforce Article II under § 63-9.
