Joliet, IL Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

1, titled "Skateboards on public ways prohibited," declares it an offense for an individual to use a skateboard upon any highway, street, roadway or alley within the City of Joliet. The section, adopted by Ordinance No. 6730 in July 1977 and codified at the editor's discretion because the enacting ordinance did not expressly amend the Code, is a single, unqualified sentence: it names no exception for sidewalks, parks, bike lanes or specific business districts, and it does not distinguish between skateboarding for transportation and skateboarding for recreation.

Because Sec. 1 sits in Chapter 21, Article I ("In General"), it is enforced through that chapter's general penalty provision, Sec. 21-9, which ties back to the citywide default fine range set in Sec. 1-8(a). Unlike loitering and fireworks, skateboarding does not appear as its own line item in the Sec. 00 plus court costs applies, with every day of a continuing violation constituting a separate offense under Sec. 1-8(a).
