Mount Pleasant, SC Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

03(A) of the Town Code bars the use of all motorized vehicles, skateboards, in-line skates or any like devices on the pedestrian/bicycle walkway of the Ben Sawyer Bridge, with narrow exceptions for electric wheelchairs and other devices used by handicapped persons, and for vehicles on official business. The chapter, adopted under the town's police powers to protect a 'large and elevated structure with high volume use,' gives town police officers jurisdiction on the bridge the authority to confiscate any violating skateboard, in-line skates or like device and deliver it to the Chief of Police.

03(B)(1) lets a parent or legal guardian personally appear before the Chief within 10 days of mailed notice to get the item back; if no one claims it, the item is destroyed or sold at auction after 90 days. A second or subsequent offense within one year by the same person results in the item being destroyed or sold at auction outright, with no return option. Anyone 17 or older caught skateboarding on the walkway is charged under the chapter's penalty section rather than handled through confiscation alone.

03(J), a separate town-parks rule, permits bicycles, roller skates and skateboards in town-owned parks but only on roadways, bikeways or other designated areas, so riders should not treat the bridge ban and the parks rule as the same restriction.
