Oneida, NY Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Chapter 26 covers both bicycles and skateboards, and § 26-5 handles skateboards on its own. Subsection A makes it unlawful to use, operate or ride a skateboard within the limits of any public street, or upon any sidewalk or other city property, unless the Common Council has designated that area for skateboarding. The chapter does not name any designated area in the text itself, leaving that decision to future Council action. Subsection B ties skateboarding penalties directly to the bicycle penalty schedule in § 26-4B: a first conviction draws a fine of not more than $10 or up to five days in jail, or both; a second conviction within 18 months rises to not more than $25 or 10 days; and a third or subsequent conviction within 18 months of the first reaches not more than $50 or 15 days, or both.

Section 26-5B also lets a court order the offender to pay restitution for any loss or damage the skateboarding caused, on top of the fine. Subsection C extends liability to parents and guardians: any parent of a child, or guardian of a ward under 16, who knowingly lets the child violate the skateboarding ban is themselves guilty of a traffic infraction and subject to the same fines and restitution. Chapter 26 traces back to the city's 1982 Code and was last restructured June 17, 2014 by Ord. No. 14-01, which renumbered the bicycle sections and left § 26-5 in place as the chapter's skateboard-specific rule.
