Plantation, FL Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Article IV of Chapter 25 of the Plantation Code of Ordinances regulates skateboarding directly. Sec. 25-91 defines a skateboard as a single wheeled platform, treats a skateboard rider as a "pedestrian" for right-of-way purposes, and distinguishes a bike lane (a marked portion of the roadway) from a bike path (a separate pathway paralleling a roadway, within seventy-five feet of it). Sec. 25-92 sets the rules of the road: skateboarding is prohibited on any roadway or in the bike lane of any roadway adjacent to a community facility, commercial, or business zoned development, and on such developed property itself, unless the property owner posts city-council-approved signage allowing it.

Skateboarding in a residential roadway's bike lane is allowed only where traffic volume, speed, or road width makes the lane safe for both pedestrians and skateboarders, and only if there is no adjacent bike path or sidewalk; where a bike path or sidewalk does run alongside that residential roadway, skateboarding in the bike lane is barred there too. Skateboarding is separately prohibited on any sidewalk adjacent to a community facility, business, or commercial zoned development, but is affirmatively permitted on bike paths and all sidewalks adjacent to residential developments.

Skateboard riders on sidewalks and bike paths must yield right-of-way to bicycles and other non-skateboard pedestrians, and riders in residential bike lanes get the same rights and duties as non-skateboard pedestrians. No ramps, obstacles, rails or other skateboarding structures may be built on any sidewalk, bike path, bike lane or roadway. These rules date to Ord. No. 1776 from April 1991 and remain unamended since.
