Plantation, FL Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Section 27-296(o) defines a fence or wall as a barrier of manmade materials, permitting concrete masonry or tile for walls and wood or galvanized steel or similar materials for fences, so long as the design is properly constructed and maintained. Within the same general standards, subsection (o)(1)h bans barbed wire or similar materials outright, with a single carve-out cross-referenced to subsection 27-296(e)(4)c for a specific use not covered by the general residential and commercial fence rules. Subsection (o)(1)i goes further and prohibits razor wire components and any electrically charged components on fences, walls, and gates anywhere in the city, without exception.

Both prohibitions apply regardless of property line location, so a barbed-wire strand along the top of an otherwise compliant six-foot rear fence is still a violation even though the fence height itself is within the residential limit. The two bans sit inside the same subsection that governs fence permitting, construction quality, and setback rules, so a fence built with prohibited materials can be cited on the material violation alone, independent of any height or placement issue. Surfaces on masonry walls and wood or metal fences must also be finished the same way on both sides so that adjoining property owners and the public right-of-way see an equal-quality appearance, and the structural framing for wood and metal fences must face inward toward the fenced property rather than outward toward the neighbor.
