Plantation, FL Animal Ordinances: Pet Limits (2026)

Section 27-296(k) regulates domestic pet shelters and pens in residential districts, and its numeric animal limit sits inside that subsection. Subsection (k)(3) sets the ceiling at three dogs or other common domestic household animals over six months of age on any residential lot, city-wide, with one carve-out: lots zoned RS-1EP in the Plantation Acres area are not bound by that three-animal cap and can exceed it under the agricultural standards for farm animals in Section 27-105(d). The rest of subsection (k) covers where and how an owner can keep an actual shelter or pen for those animals: it cannot sit in the required front yard or inside a utility, drainage, or access easement, and the structure must be set back at least six feet from the side and rear lot lines.

A pet shelter is also capped at 15 square feet in area; anything larger is treated as a farm structure and is restricted to RS-1EP-zoned Plantation Acres property under the same farm-animal limitations. Whatever pen or shelter exists must be kept clean and neat, consistent with the rest of the City Code. Because the three-animal limit is written into the accessory-use standards for Chapter 27 rather than the animal-control chapter, it operates as a zoning limit on how many dogs or common household pets a residential property can lawfully host, separate from any City Code licensing or leash requirements for those same animals.
