Plantation, FL Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Section 16-2(8) of the Noise chapter regulates vehicles and boats directly. makes it unlawful to discharge the exhaust of any steam, turbine or internal combustion engine, on a motor vehicle, boat or any other machine, into the open air except through a muffler or other device that prevents excessive, unnecessary or offensive sound. separately bars operating a motor vehicle or motor-propelled boat that is so out of repair, defective, or under such a load, acceleration or deceleration condition, that it creates excessive, unnecessary or offensive sound.

prohibits modifying or changing a vehicle's exhaust muffler, intake muffler or any other sound-abatement device so the vehicle becomes louder than it was as originally manufactured, with compliance tested the same way new vehicles are tested. S. Chapter 316. separately bars running the motor of any vehicle over 8,000 pounds for more than five consecutive minutes while parked on private property within 150 feet of land zoned and used for multi-family residential purposes, unless the vehicle sits inside a fully enclosed structure; emergency vehicles, public transportation and delivery vehicles actively loading or unloading are exempt.

caps any engine-powered pleasure vessel, craft or motorboat operating on a lake, canal or waterway within the city at 74 dBA, measured at least 50 feet from the boat's path of travel. Horn use is separately restricted under Section 16-2(5), which bars sounding a vehicle, boat, train or machine horn while stationary except as a danger warning or as legally required.
