Unified Government Code § 35-695 restricts "coasters, roller skates, skateboards, and similar devices" to keep them off the roadway network that motor vehicles use. " Subsection (b) hands sidewalk control to the traffic engineer: roller skating or skateboard riding becomes unlawful on any sidewalk location where that office has posted signs prohibiting it, meaning the rule is locally postable rather than a blanket citywide sidewalk ban. A companion section, § 35-696, targets powered boards specifically: "It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motorized skateboard on any street, road, or highway," with no crosswalk or play-street carve-out, since motorized skateboards are treated as motor vehicles rather than human-powered toys.

Both sections sit in Article XIV alongside the bicycle and electric-scooter rules of chapter 35, and § 35-695 traces to Ord. No. 53410 (1975) with the sidewalk-signage clause added by Ord. No. 65479 in 1989; § 35-696 was added later by Ord. No. O-2-05 in 2005 once motorized boards appeared on the market. Because the sections fall under chapter 35's traffic offenses, enforcement is handled by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department under the same citation process used for other non-moving traffic violations.
