Galt does not operate a mandatory rental registration or inspection program. Residential rentals must still comply with California Civil Code habitability standards and the State Housing Law enforced by Galt code enforcement on a complaint basis.
Unlike cities such as Sacramento or Los Angeles, Galt has not adopted a Rental Housing Inspection Program or proactive rental registry. Landlords are not required to register units or obtain annual rental permits with the city. Residential rentals must meet habitability standards under California Civil Code section 1941.1 (the warranty of habitability), Health and Safety Code section 17920.3 (substandard housing), and Title 25 of the California Code of Regulations. Galt code enforcement responds to tenant complaints and may inspect for violations such as lack of heat, plumbing failures, vermin infestation, and dangerous structural conditions. A city business license is required under Galt Municipal Code Title 5 for anyone conducting rental business within the city.
Substandard housing violations may result in notices to correct, citations, and in severe cases orders to vacate under Health and Safety Code section 17980.
