Irvington, NJ Rental Property Rules: Rental Registration (2026)

Township Code § 464-2(A), part of Chapter 464 (Registration of Commercial and Multifamily Properties, adopted 2015), bars anyone from keeping, maintaining or operating a covered commercial or residential property in Irvington without first registering with the police official. on any day of the week and "residential units" as a building of five or more family units, so smaller landlords sit outside this particular registration duty even though other chapters, like Chapter 467 on rental property and Chapter 472 rent control, still apply to them. Registration is filed on a notarized application through the Division of Licensing naming the owner, the property location, and a designated manager or registered agent authorized to accept legal notices.

New businesses or residences must register within 30 days of finishing construction or opening, existing ones had to comply by February 1, 2016, and any change in ownership, agent or manager requires a new certificate within 30 days under § 464-4. The administrative fee is $100 under § 464-8, and a certificate expires every December 31 and must be renewed within 10 days of expiration under § 464-9. The certificate must be posted where the public can see it inside the property.
