Irvington, NJ Parking Rules: Preferential Parking Districts (2026)

Section 620-17 lets Irvington designate specific streets as resident-only parking zones, with each street's restricted hours and days set out in Schedule VA (§ 620-99). Anyone parking on one of those streets during the posted hours must be a resident of that street and must display a parking permit issued by the Township; a vehicle in violation can be towed and its owner fined under the schedule at § 620-4B. The annual fee is $35 for each of the first two permits a household buys; a third or fourth permit costs $50 each, and no household may hold more than four permits total.

Anyone buying a permit with fewer than 180 calendar days left in the year pays half the regular price for that permit. Corner properties get a special rule: the owner of a corner lot at the intersection of a resident-only street is entitled to one parking permit from the Township, but that right belongs solely to the deeded owner and does not pass to a tenant or lessee. To prove residency, an applicant must produce at least three of five documents, and two of them, a driver's license showing the claimed address and proof of the vehicle's registration and insurance, are mandatory regardless of which other two the applicant supplies; the remaining acceptable documents are a lease or deed, a Certificate of Habitability from the Department of Housing and Building, or a utility bill in the applicant's name at the claimed address.
