Irvington, NJ Short-Term Rentals: Noise Rules (2026)

Chapter 510 of the Irvington Township Code, adopted by the Municipal Council on May 22, 2023, makes it unlawful for any owner, lessor, sublessor, or person with possessory rights in a dwelling unit to receive consideration for soliciting, advertising, offering, or permitting use or occupancy of a dwelling unit for less than 30 days. Chapter 467 (Rental Property) repeats the same 30-day floor. Because true short-term rentals are not lawful, there is no STR-specific noise standard. For lawful longer-term rentals and for licensed hotels and motels, Chapter 397 (Noise, originally adopted 1976) governs. Chapter 397 makes it unlawful to produce sound exceeding 65 decibels measured at the point of annoyance between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., or 50 decibels between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. The chapter also prohibits loud, unnecessary, or unusual noise that disturbs comfort, repose, or peace, including amplified devices audible beyond the carrier's hearing range and unmuffled engine exhaust.
