Ridgewood, NJ Short-Term Rentals: Noise Rules (2026)

Ridgewood does not have an STR-targeted noise ordinance because the Village has banned compensated stays under 31 days outright (Code §117 Art. IX). For lawful 30+ day rentals, the citywide noise rules in Code Chapter 201 apply. Chapter 201's general standard is broad: 'The making, creating or permitting of any unreasonable and unnecessary loud or disturbing noise in the Village of Ridgewood is hereby prohibited.' The chapter is enforced by the Ridgewood Police Department on a complaint basis and is not built around a specific decibel meter reading at the property line, although NJDEP model standards (N.J.A.C. 7:29) of 65 dBA daytime / 50 dBA nighttime at the receiving residential property line are referenced statewide and used as guidance. Specific time-bound prohibitions in Chapter 201 include yelling, shouting, hooting, whistling or singing on the public streets between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., and a prohibition on sounding train whistles or horns within the Village at any time except in an emergency. Chapter 222 (Power Tools, Manual Tools, Motorized Construction Equipment, Landscaping and Yard Maintenance Equipment) layers in additional limits: commercial use of power tools and motorized landscaping equipment is prohibited on Sundays and all federal holidays Village-wide, and use is restricted to specified daytime hours on other days. Repeated noise complaints at a single address can also be referred for nuisance abatement under New Jersey common-law nuisance and Ridgewood property-maintenance enforcement. Because hosting any paid stay under 31 days is itself a §117 Art. IX violation, a noise complaint at a suspected illegal STR can trigger both a Chapter 201 citation against the occupants and a §117 Art. IX enforcement action against the owner/lister.
