Colonie, NY Sign Regulations: Digital Billboards (2026)

Town Code § 190-84(B)(1) folds digital billboards into the same general regulations as illuminated static billboards, and the code expressly says the illumination rule 'shall not prohibit digital billboards,' so long as they hold each message for at least eight seconds. A digital board can also be required to display Amber Alerts and other public service messages when Town, county, or state emergency services need it. Beyond the timing rule, a digital billboard still has to clear every general billboard standard: no billboard can exceed 400 square feet where the adjacent road's speed limit is 45 mph or lower, or 700 square feet on faster roads; height is capped at 30 feet above grade; and the permit process runs through a zoning verification, Planning Board site plan approval, and an annual renewal filed within 14 calendar days of January 1.

Colonie treats digital replacement of an existing billboard as a pilot program under § 190-84(E)(2): an owner may swap a standard billboard for a digital one only if the replacement matches the prior sign's size and location, and only at two addresses named in the code, 50 Fuller Road and 1160 Loudon Road. Outside those two sites, a new digital billboard has to go through the same site plan and zoning verification process as any other new billboard, and it is still confined to the Industrial District under § 190-84(C).
