Bannock County, ID Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Section 17.52.470 of the Bannock County Code regulates off-premise billboards countywide, and subsection L sets the maximum area allowed for any one face of a billboard based on the road it faces. Table 1 in that subsection gives interstate-adjacent billboards the largest allowance in the county at 672 square feet, while billboards adjacent to a state highway or along any other road are capped at 300 square feet; the office of planning and development services can require an even smaller sign on those other roads.

The area measurement includes the border, trim, cutouts and extensions of the sign face but excludes its supports and decorative base, and temporary embellishments cannot add more than twenty percent to the allowed area. Billboards throughout the county, including those benefiting from the larger interstate allowance, are also capped at thirty-five feet in height from the roadway's centerline grade to the bottom of the sign face (subsection C), must sit back at least ten feet from the road right-of-way (subsection D), and cannot stand within five hundred feet of another off-premise billboard along the same side of the road (subsection L.4.a).

Billboards are permitted only in the agricultural, recreational, industrial and light industrial districts and must keep at least 250 feet from any residential district (subsection N). An applicant seeking a billboard, including the larger interstate-facing size, must give neighboring property owners within three hundred feet mailed notice and fifteen days to comment before the planning director decides the application, and that decision can be appealed under Section 17.56.130 (subsection P).
