Bannock County, ID Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Section 12.20.080 of the Bannock County Municipal Code, part of Chapter 12.20 governing the county's recreation and events services areas, restricts business and advertising activity there. Subsection A bars anyone from operating a business, enterprise or concession without the board of county commissioners' prior written authorization or contract. Subsection B declares that all advertising space is the exclusive property of Bannock County and bars any signs, banners or printed material without the board's prior authorization. Subsection C then draws a hard line for two categories: absolutely no religious or political signs will be permitted, full stop, with no board-authorization exception carved out the way there is for general advertising.

The rule applies only within the boundaries of the Downey Fairgrounds, the Bannock County Events Center and the Portneuf Wellness Complex in unincorporated Bannock County; it does not reach private property, public rights-of-way, or the rest of the unincorporated county, where the county's Title 17 zoning sign standards, not this chapter, govern. Because the ban sits in the chapter's property-and-advertising-restrictions section rather than its enforcement section, a violation is punished the same way as other Chapter 12.20 violations: as an infraction under Section 12.20.130(B), unless a separate criminal law applies.

Officers or authorized security personnel enforcing the chapter may confiscate a prohibited sign as property used in a violation under Section 12.20.130(A), and the board or director retains authority under Section 12.20.030 to limit or deny access to the property for health, safety or event-management reasons, which can include clearing an area of unauthorized signage before a permitted event.
