Norwalk, CT Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

G(7) sets the spacing rule for off-premises signs, commonly billboards: the minimum distance between off-premises signs on the same side of a street is 300 feet, but that minimum jumps to 500 feet for any off-premises sign erected to be visible from an interstate highway, measured from any other off-premises sign structure on the same side of the street facing the same direction. G's off-premises sign package: a 600-square-foot cap on combined area for both faces, a 12-by-25-foot limit on any single face, a 30-foot maximum structure height measured from the center line of the street the sign faces, setbacks matching the underlying zone, and a citywide hard cap of 30 off-premises sign structures total, conforming or nonconforming, before any new permit can issue.

A permit from the Building Inspector is required before construction or relocation of any such sign, in addition to any state permit. If an existing off-premises sign is destroyed by fire, explosion, act of God or a public enemy to more than 50% of its assessed value, it may only be rebuilt to its prior height, bulk, location and use, subject to Director of Planning and Zoning approval and a rebuild permit obtained within 60 days of the destruction.
