Arcadia, CA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 6437.2 of the Arcadia Municipal Code sets the sign rules for patio, garage and backyard sales in the City of Arcadia, California, and subsection (d) is the operative text. It bars any sign, billboard, placard, or other form of advertisement of the sale from being placed upon any public property within the City.

On the sale premises, the advertisement cannot go up more than two days before the date the sale is to commence, and it must be removed by 6:00 p.m. on the day the sale terminates. No more than one sign, billboard, placard or other form of advertisement is allowed on the premises. That sign cannot exceed four square feet in size and must be in the front yard area. Section 9104.02.360(F) of the Development Code says yard sale signs are subject to the requirements of Section 6437, so the same limits carry into the residential zoning districts where yard sales take place.

The sign rule sits beside other conditions in the same section. A written permit issued through the office of the City Business License Officer is required before the sale. One permit authorizes no more than two sales per calendar year at a given location, and one sale lasts no more than two consecutive days. No sale starts before 8:00 a.m., and each day concludes at or before 6:00 p.m. Goods cannot be displayed in the front yard of any residence, nor in the side yard of a corner lot unless that side yard is screened from the view of the adjacent public right-of-way to the maximum height permitted. Section 6437.2(f) defines front yard as the full width of the lot lying between the public right-of-way and the front building line of the main house on the premises. The one allowed sign is the only advertising item the section permits on the premises.
