Chino Hills allows one double-faced garage/yard sale sign, up to 6 square feet, on the sale property only (max 4 feet tall in the front-yard or side-street setback). It may be posted 24 hours before the sale and removed immediately after. No signs on city property. A free permit is required to hold the sale.
Garage, yard, and rummage sale signs in Chino Hills are governed by Municipal Code Section 5.04.330. One double-faced sign is permitted, not to exceed 6 square feet in area, and it may only be placed on the property where the sale is located. The sign's maximum height is 5 feet, reduced to 4 feet when it is placed within the front-yard or side-street-yard setback. The sign may be posted no more than 24 hours prior to the sale and must be removed immediately following the sale; no signs may be placed on city property. The sale itself requires a free permit from the city's Code Enforcement counter at City Hall: a household may obtain up to three permits in any 12-month period, with at least a 60-day interval between sales, and each permit allows the sale to run up to three consecutive days or two consecutive two-day weekends, with hours limited to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday through Sunday. Signs placed in violation (for example on city property or in the public right-of-way) are removed by the city, and the city charges a per-sign removal fee for improperly placed signs (the city's published fee increased to $76 per sign effective January 1, 2026).
Posting a garage-sale sign on city property or the public right-of-way, using more than one sign or a sign over 6 square feet, exceeding the height limits, or leaving signs up after the sale can result in removal by the city and a per-sign removal fee. Holding a sale without the required permit also violates the city's yard-sale rules.
