Cleveland, OH Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

04(a)(6). Only one sign is allowed per lot or townhouse unit, and it must be either a window sign or a free-standing sign: no other structural type qualifies. A free-standing sign cannot exceed 4 square feet in area or 4 feet in height, and it must sit at least 5 feet back from every lot line, keeping it off sidewalks and away from neighboring yards. The display period is limited to no more than three separate four-day stretches over a calendar year, so a sign cannot stay up indefinitely between sales.

13(d) adds a second, narrower option: up to four temporary directional signs per event may be placed on the public tree lawn to point traffic toward a single-family, two-family, or townhouse open house, garage sale, or house auction, limited to 2 square feet each, 3 feet tall, at least 1 foot from curbs and sidewalks, and only on corner lots or at street intersections, with no more than two such signs per block for any one event. Those directional signs may go up only on the actual day(s) of the event, capped at three three-day periods per year for garage sales and auctions, two days a week for open houses, and only with the consent of the property owner adjoining the tree lawn.
