Kent, WA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

KCC 15.08.205 is the city's temporary use regulations chapter, and garage sales are one of the temporary uses it lists in subsection (A), alongside carnivals, construction offices, and seasonal sales lots. Subsection (A)(11) supplies the sign rules that apply to all of those listed temporary uses, including the garage and moving sales authorized separately in (A)(12): temporary signs relating directly to the temporary uses described in this section may be displayed for a period not exceeding the operation of the use itself, meaning a garage-sale sign can only go up while the sale is running.

The signs must be portable and placed on the premises where the sale is occurring; off-premises signs, such as directional signs posted at a nearby intersection or on someone else's property, are not permitted under this subsection. Each use is limited to no more than two signs, and no sign may exceed 32 square feet of total sign face when both sides are counted together. Maximum sign height is capped at eight feet. Unlike many of the city's other sign categories, subsection (A)(11) expressly states no sign permit is required for these temporary-use signs, so a garage-sale host does not need to apply to the planning department before posting them, only the underlying temporary use itself in (A)(12) has to meet its own frequency limit.
