Kent allows garage sale signs on private property during the sale but prohibits them in the public right-of-way, on utility poles, and on traffic signs. Signs must be removed within 24 hours of the sale end.
Kent regulates temporary event and garage sale signs under Kent City Code 15.06 (Sign Code) and KCC 6.07 (Streets and Sidewalks). Garage sale signs are allowed on private property with the property owner's consent during the sale and for a reasonable period (generally 24 hours) before and after. Individual signs cannot exceed 4 square feet in area in residential zones and must not obstruct sidewalks, sight lines at intersections, or driveway access. Placement of garage sale signs on utility poles, street light poles, traffic signs, fences, and in the planting strip between sidewalk and curb is prohibited under KCC 15.06.050 and is a common code enforcement complaint in Kent neighborhoods. Signs attached to utility poles with nails, staples, or tape can also create safety hazards for line workers and can be removed by Puget Sound Energy without notice. City crews and Code Enforcement officers remove signs from the public right-of-way on a reactive and proactive basis and store them for pickup at City Hall. Chronic violators may be fined 100 to 250 dollars under KCC 1.04 (Civil Enforcement). Stay within private yard boundaries and you will not have an issue. Contact Kent Code Enforcement at 253-856-5270 with questions.
Signs in the public right-of-way are removed without notice. Chronic posting in prohibited locations can lead to civil infractions of 100 to 250 dollars under KCC 1.04 and KCC 15.06.050.
