Lakewood, NJ Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Township of Lakewood UDO § 18-812B7 exempts temporary yard or garage sale signs from the Zoning Office's sign permit requirement, but the exemption comes with four specific limits written into the section itself. The sign cannot exceed four square feet in area. It cannot be erected more than seven days before the sale takes place. It must be removed within 48 hours after the sale ends. And no single premises may put up such signs more than two times in any calendar year, meaning a household or business is limited to two garage or yard sale events with signage per year regardless of how many separate sales it might otherwise hold.

Like every other exempted sign under § 18-812B, a garage sale sign still has to meet the general sign standards in § 18-812A, including the prohibition at § 18-812A6 on placing any sign within the sight-triangle at a street intersection and the ban at § 18-812A7 on mounting signs on rooftops, fences, trees, utility poles or natural features. The rule applies to any lot in the Township, not just single-family residential parcels, since § 18-812B does not limit the exemption by zoning district.
