Lakewood, NJ Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Township of Lakewood UDO § 18-812A13a, Supplementary Sign Regulations and Design Considerations, governs interior signs, meaning signage affixed to, displayed in, or painted on a window. No interior sign may cover more than 25% of the window it occupies. The Zoning Official has discretion to raise that limit to 50% of a window's area, but only upon written application from the business and only during or immediately before a community-wide sales event, and any sign approved under that exception cannot stay up for more than 15 days.

Window signs also count toward a lot's overall sign budget: § 18-812A8 folds permanent signs visible on or through windows into the aggregate sign area limit for the whole lot, so a business cannot use window signage to end-run its permitted freestanding or wall sign allowance. A sign permit is required from the Zoning Office for most signage under § 18-812A2, though that same subsection notes that a permit issued for a window sign or changeable copy sign stays valid as long as the size, location and type authorized by the permit doesn't change.
