Temporary window-mounted signs, provided that the area of window-mounted signs displayed does not exceed 50% of the area of the window on which they are mounted and that no window sign shall project over, occupy or obstruct any window surface required for light or ventilation.

(6) On-site informational signs, provided that each sign is limited to a window, facade or ground-mounted sign and no more than two square feet in area and not more than seven feet in height above grade. The sign may include a business name or logo but shall not include any advertising message. In locations where more than one business shares a common vehicular access, signs marking entrances and exits shall contain only the name of the shopping or business center. Multiple signs identifying each tenant or use are specifically prohibited.

(7) Flags and emblems of a government, civic, philanthropic, educational, or religious organization, provided that the number is limited to one of each type of flag or emblem, and is displayed, in the opinion of the Municipal Planner, in such a manner that gives recognition and respect to the organization that the flag or emblem represents. In the matter of the United States Flag, it should be displayed in accordance with the congressional Act "Flag Code" (4 U.S.C. §§ 4-10) of the United States Congress which regulates the flying of our national symbol.

Full Breakdown

Brick Township's zoning code lists window-mounted signs as an exempt sign category, so they don't need a separate sign permit -- but the exemption carries hard limits. Under Code § 245-314B(5), the combined area of window signs displayed in a window cannot exceed 50% of that window's total area, and no window sign may project over, occupy, or obstruct any window surface required to provide light or ventilation. Because § 245-314A(1) prohibits every sign not specifically permitted, going over the 50% threshold strips the exemption and makes the sign unlawful.

Violations & Fines

Signs are enforced under Chapter 1 § 1-15's general penalty: up to $2,000, 90 days in jail, or 90 days community service per violation, with each day of a continuing violation counted as a separate offense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for a window sign in Brick Township?
No. Temporary window-mounted signs are exempt from permitting as long as they cover no more than 50% of the window and don't block any surface needed for light or ventilation.
What happens if my window sign covers more than half the window?
It loses its exempt status and becomes a prohibited sign under § 245-314A(1), since Brick's code bans any sign that isn't specifically permitted or exempted.
