New Brunswick, NJ Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 5.52.040 of the New Brunswick Municipal Code controls signs for garage sales. Subsection A prohibits all persons from making, causing to be made, or erecting signs other than those signs specified by the city, and those signs are of uniform size and form, twelve (12) inches by twelve (12) inches. A resident cannot design a sign, buy poster board or use a commercial banner, because only the city's specified sign is allowed. Subsection B says each sign has a space allotted on it for the name and address of the person running the sale, and the signs must be removed within forty-eight (48) hours after the completion of the sale.

The section does not state where the signs may be posted or where the city issues them. The sign rule sits inside Chapter 5.52, which starts from the garage sale license: section 5.52.020 requires the license from the city clerk for a ten dollar ($10.00) fee, issues it to any one person only once within a twelve (12) month period, and caps it at four days in any one month. Section 5.52.030 restricts sales to nine a.m. through six p.m. The chapter covers garage, yard, lawn, attic and rummage sales and flea markets that are advertised to the public at large.

Section 5.52.050 exempts a person selling five or fewer specifically named items and certain charitable, educational, cultural and governmental institutions. The chief of police enforces the chapter under section 5.52.060.
