New Brunswick, NJ Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Window signs in the City of New Brunswick are covered in the exempt-signs list of Section 17.06.020. Item C exempts temporary signs inside windows of commercial establishments, but only if they do not cover more than twenty-five percent of the window area. Item D exempts window stickers denoting organizational affiliations, credit card availability, burglar systems, pet restrictions, hours of operation and similar notices. The same twenty-five percent figure returns in Section 17.06.040, the prohibited sign features list, which says no sign may obstruct any window, door, fire escape, stairway or opening intended to provide light or ingress and egress, with the exception that twenty-five percent of any window can be occupied by a sign or signs.

Neon is tighter in the neon standards of Section 17.06.050: neon signs placed within five feet of a storefront window cannot occupy more than twenty-five percent of the window area, and neon lighting that surrounds a window, door or similar element is not allowed. The downtown C-4 row of the Section 17.06.060 sign table adds its own window limits: no signs in windows except as otherwise specifically permitted, one window sign with name, street address and type of business, a window sign not to exceed 10 s.f.

(20 s.f. for corner property), and window sale signs not to exceed 25% of total window area on the first floor. Section 17.06.010 requires a permit under the Uniform Construction Code for signs unless exempt, and the zoning officer administers Title 17.
