Garage sale signs in the City of Riverside are regulated as temporary signs under RMC §19.620.090 and must be on the property where the sale is held. Signs placed on parkways, utility poles, medians or street trees are prohibited under §19.625.030 and subject to $100–$500 administrative fines.
Section 19.620.090 of the Riverside Municipal Code regulates temporary signs on private residential, commercial and industrial property (subsections B.5 and B.6 cover non-commercial and event signs). Per the City's Temporary Sign FAQ (Planning Division, 2025), garage sale signs may only be displayed on the property where the sale will occur, not in adjacent yards, intersections, parkways or rights-of-way. RMC §19.625.030 categorically bans all signs in the public street right-of-way — including stapled, taped or staked signs on utility poles, traffic signals, street trees and median strips — and the City's Code Enforcement Division routinely sweeps weekend signs. Yard sales themselves are governed separately by RMC Chapter 5.49 (Yard Sales), which limits the number of sales per address per year.
Administrative citation per RMC §19.625.030 enforcement schedule: $100 first offense, $200 second offense, $500 each subsequent offense. Signs in the right-of-way are removed and discarded by Public Works/Code Enforcement without notice. Contact: Code Enforcement (951) 826-5633.
