Southfield, MI Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 7.424 of the Southfield City Code governs garage sale signage as part of the same Chapter 70 article that sets permits and duration. At the time the permit is granted, the city clerk furnishes the applicant with a garage sale sign no larger than four square feet, printed with the premises' street address, the permit number and the permit's expiration date; the sign must be placed at least ten feet inside the property line. An applicant who wants a second sign can request one for two dollars, but that additional sign has to go up somewhere other than the sale premises and must carry the warning that it is "not to be placed in a public right-of-way or on private property without the owner's consent." Removing the sign is not optional: the permittee is responsible for taking it down immediately after the sale ends.

Any other sign advertising the garage sale is flatly prohibited, and so is putting merchandise out on display outside. The section cross-references the city's general sign regulations at Sec. 8.31 et seq., meaning a garage sale sign that also functions as a wall sign, ground support sign or garden ground sign has to satisfy Chapter 99's rules as well as this one.
