Springfield, OH Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 771.11 of Chapter 771, Springfield's garage sale ordinance, limits how sale signs may be displayed. No more than two signs may advertise a single garage sale, and each sign is capped at four square feet. The signs may be displayed only on the premises where the sale itself is held, not at other locations such as street corners away from the property. They may go up only on the day or days of the sale and the two days immediately before it, and Section 771.11 requires every sign to be removed by 6:00 p.m. on the last day of the sale.

The sign rule sits inside the same chapter that limits garage sales themselves to two per residence per calendar year and three consecutive days from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. under Section 771.07, and that limits what can be sold to personal property under Section 771.02. Enforcement follows the rest of Chapter 771: under Section 771.12, any garage sale found on inspection to be operating in violation of the chapter, including its sign limits, may be closed by the Business Licensing Officer or another public official responsible for enforcing the ordinance.

Section 771.15 makes each day a violation continues a separate offense, and Section 771.16 lets the Community Development Director issue citation tags for inspectors to serve on violators, directing them to appear in Municipal Court or pay a stated fine and costs.
