St. Peters, MO Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 405.750(O) of the St. Peters Municipal Code addresses garage and yard sale signs directly: no such sign may be placed on residentially zoned property other than the property where the sale is actually held, unless the owner of that other property consents. That consent requirement stops a seller from papering a neighbor's yard or a nearby vacant lot with directional signage without permission. The same subsection then sets the removal deadline, requiring that signs advertising a yard or garage sale come down within 2 days following the last day of the sale, so a weekend sale's signs cannot linger through the following week.

Garage and yard sale signs are also swept into the broader right-of-way prohibition in Section 405.750(E)(1), which bars them, like political and real estate signs, from any public right-of-way or City property except within narrow, unrelated exceptions tied to elections or civic events. Because garage sale signs fall under the City's general temporary-sign framework in Section 405.750, they must also meet the general public-safety rule in Section 405.750(B): a sign cannot block a window, door, passageway or fire escape, or be placed so it obscures a driver's or pedestrian's view of traffic.

Sellers do not need a temporary-sign permit for a garage sale sign the way some other temporary signs require, but the consent and 2-day removal requirements are not optional.
