St. Peters, MO Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Section 405.750(E)(1) of the St. Peters Municipal Code groups political signs with garage and yard sale signs, real estate signs, residential construction project signs and church directional signs, and bans every one of them, temporary or permanent, from any public right-of-way or City property. The prohibition reaches anyone except the City of St. Peters itself and its departments, agencies, contractors or subcontractors, St. Charles County and the State of Missouri; a private citizen, campaign or committee cannot plant a political sign in the road right-of-way or on City-owned land under any circumstance outside the two listed exceptions.

The first exception lets a temporary sign supporting or opposing a candidate or ballot proposition sit within 100 feet of a polling place, but only on the day of the election itself. The second, unrelated exception covers civic or charitable fundraising signage, allowed only the day before and the day of the event. Section 405.750(A) defines 'right-of-way' broadly to include any street, road, alley or avenue dedicated for public walkway or thoroughfare use, whether or not public improvements extend to its full dedicated limits, and defines 'City property' to include anything owned, rented or leased to the City.

Even where a sign qualifies under one of the two exceptions, Section 405.750(E)(2) still requires it not create a hazard to traveling or pedestrian traffic and forbids affixing it to any structure within the right-of-way.
